Re:Nylon

Nylon has been a crucial material for Prada. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone nylon in its bag and accessory line won it worldwide acclaim, while Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, ready-for-hypebeast line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has transformed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable reNylon fabrics. The new collection comes with six classic designs including a belt bag, shoulder bag, tote bag duffle bag and two backpacks made of recycled ECONYL fabric that is made from recycled fishing nets, plastics and textile fiber waste sourced all over the world.

The material that is recycled is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil which is a textile yarn producer in Italy that produces Econyl fabric using recycled nylon waste. The fabric can be reused many times without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed material is part of a larger plan to transition Prada's entire portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the collection also includes a pair shoes and boots made of repurposed ECONYL as well as various apparel items made of the same fabrication.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", a video series that highlights the innovative process used to create the Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility that transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's decision to re-Nylon is their largest reduction in virgin nylon so far. It will save 70,000 barrels of crude oil each year. Additionally, the change will reduce the company's emissions by 57,000 tonnes. It's the latest sustainability initiative by the label which recently made it fur-free on its clothing and accessories, a move applauded by both environmentalists and animal rights activists alike.

Recycled Nylon

Recycled nylon does not come without its disadvantages. It's not biodegradable, and will remain in oceans or landfills until it breaks down into smaller particles which can harm wildlife. The fabric may also shed microplastics after washing. It uses 50% less energy than regular nylon and is more durable.

The fabric is made of the waste plastic and petroleum that is made from fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources as well as carbon emissions resulting from the production of nylon that is virgin. It is also more manageable than other bags, as it doesn't need to be dyed or woven. This makes it an ideal option for bags that will be used frequently for gym or yoga equipment.

Recycled nylon is stronger and more flexible than polyester or cotton that are both traditional fabrics. It's also able to endure a lot of abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor equipment. It is also extremely lightweight and is easily formed and stitched into the desired shape of bags. Nylon is also a great choice for outdoor gear because it is water-resistant and doesn't take in mildew or odors as easily as other fabrics.

When choosing bags that are sustainable, look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification.  prada cleo bag  is a test for chemical residues, as well as environmental and social responsibility. This certification is a great indication of brands that are transparent and accountable.

Patagonia is a good example. It has a variety of yoga equipment and backpacks that are made from recycled nylon, also known as Econyl. This nylon is produced using a closed loop system that uses 50 less energy than virgin nylon. The brand also supports groups that work to protect our planet.
